Any fans of Sons of Anarchy here? It's just so good that I thought the name deserved to be here, even though it's not technically a movie.
I'm halfway through season two and lovin it so far.
And I'd like to add Matthew McConaughey to the suck-ass-list cause of "Sufer, Dude" and "Sahara" and that one with Sarah Jessica Parker. These movies are real bullshit in pretty packaging. Ye be warned.

Changeling (Angelina Jolie)
Push (if you like super-hero movies, and Camilla Belle is hot.)

ADP- I tried to like Sons of Anarchy, I guess either I didn't get it or I didn't watch enough of it- I tried 5 episodes which is past my normal give it 3 rule. I felt the same way about Breaking Bad which I honestly think I maybe should check out again as everyone loves it and I maybe didn't give it enough of a chance. So tell me...how many episodes/seasons in before it starts grabbing one? My main issue was, I was raised around real life people that populate the fake world of that script and the script was so far off base as to what I experienced people to be like...but that's just me.

Oh yeah and I haven't liked McConaughey in anything but the one Texas Chainsaw remake he was in. So I agree with you there.

Heya Grainne, nice to see you in here. I know SoA is very loosely based on the Hells Angels. (Sonny Barger appears in a few episodes) And I know what you mean, what with motorcycle clubs in california being composed of redneck idiots mostly. But to me, SoA is art. It's how an anarchist outlaw group could be. (Not a bunch of racist, uneducated, worthless goons.) I don't know what exactly caught my eye about it first but I guess I would say the wanton violence. I should mention I've only seen the complete second season and like five random episodes of the first season three years ago. I had read Hunter S. Thompson's "Hell's Angels" some years back but because of my prejudice against them I couldn't or maybe wasn't in the right frame of mind to grab the essence of the book. I'm halfway through it now and I'd definitely add it to the book thread as a must-read.

Breaking Bad takes time to warm up to, but by the second season it becomes so twisted you can seem to stop yourself from finding out what happens next. For a series however, I really like "Dexter". It has a couple of slow spots, but manages to pick up again, and the character development is great. Michael C. Hall is just one of the best, most kick-ass actors out there. It's amazing how with just a slight change of expression he can go from the guy next door to a very scary, sinister fellow.

I'm getting Breaking Bad season 1-4 dvdrip, and man the torrent is immensely popular. There's like ~2200 seeds as opposed to 150 for SoA S1-5. I'm guessing that means something.
Is it OK to talk about downloading pirated material here? I mean US copyright means jack shit in Iran and I probably can't get in any trouble. But if you guys could, then I'll remove what I said.

You can talk about it, but to actually use our site to direct to downloading pirated movies could definitely get us into trouble. There's a great deal of difference between free speech and free actions. With the availability of Netflix, movies can be watched from the screen so cheaply that I don't know why anyone in the US would want to risk piracy. Even rentals have started going for as little as a dollar a day, and you can buy a lot of great DVD's for five to nine dollars. When piracy isn't profitable, it somehow loses its glamor.

So, I finally sat through the first 6 episodes of SoA S1, (took me 3 days) and Grainne I totally get why you didn't like it. It's not much like S2, pretty boring actually. If you ever decide to give it another go, just watch the last 2-3 episodes of S1 and then move on to the second season.
And I've noticed something strange about people. (well, myself actually) Up to a week ago some arab satellite-tv channel was airing the second season of soa, one episode per day, none on weekends. (thursday and friday) Theirs was a heavily censored version too I might add. So, at the appointed hour every day I literally felt a wave of energy and excitement and a magnetic pull towards the TV. Even if I was feeling shitty when the show started, I'd come out the other end feeling awesome, renewed, full of hope.
But that "era" ended last week and just about then I completed downloading S1-5. I say the era ended because the past few days I've only approached soa whenever I felt bored or in order to prevent feeling bored. I don't know if the first season is just boring or if it's me, or both. But the sense of excitement is completely gone and replaced by boredom.
I'm generally never bored, and I never fear boredom. But somehow without noticing I seem to have succumbed to the ways of the city-people. I'm more than convinced that the norm in big cities is for people to be bored, and the impulse which keeps them going is the fear of boredom. I'd say (most) people in the city don't watch their favorite TV show because they feel inexplicably excited and drawn to it, no, they watch their favorite show or read their favorite books because they are bored and or want to avoid being bored by occupying themselves with something.
I'm gonna try to figure out what the hell's wrong with me.

It is an interesting social question, the boredom factor. I think you may be on to something, it would explain why so many people read such varied crap. And really I can't leave myself out of it. I read crap to occupy waiting time in offices, or waiting on this and that by reading things I would never normally read, but it's easy and you can put it down and come back to it. Whereas, something great, I would have a very hard time setting down. It explains why some books I breath in in a day or two and some are still sitting here with dog-ears.
I don't know about television and film. For myself, and I do watch a lot of stuff, but I will turn off whatever bores me. I notice younger people watching things while barely taking it in.

BTW, Karla, I love dexter. I loved Michael C. Hall in Six Feet Under too, he had a better supporting ensemble in that show to my opinion.
ADP- you may like Justified, if you have not checked it out, it's about a modern Federal Marshall that has to police his hometown of Hill folks. It is very well written and done and I love Timothy Olyphant who stars in it. He was also in Deadwood, another all time favorite series of mine.

I've seen Justified. Not really my thing. Although I can watch just about anything and enjoy it immensely, if I'm not afflicted by some weird city-vibe. But what usually stands out for me (and this goes for all forms of art) is where I see reflections of my own feelings. I don't know if that makes sense or not.
Hmm.. I used to know this girl who really liked the Eclipse movies. She looked a lot like that girl in the films, I mean they were exactly the same "type" and not just in terms of looks (She was a more beautiful version of Kristen Stewart) but moods and personality too. So, I always figured she liked the movie 'cause she must have felt some connection with the protagonist. But it turned out she just liked it cause she thought and I quote "Edward's so cute." I think I remember her giving me a distinct strange look when I mentioned that she was a lot like Bella Swan, like I was crazy for even suggesting that she might have liked the movie because of the girl (and not the guy.) ..or something.

I can respect that. Not everything is going to click for everyone. One movie I saw this summer which was not at all serious and a bit fluffy but more than entertaining was Moonlight Kingdom. It, in fact pleased the broad range of tastes that were assembled that night. Nothing much else impressed me this year.
Oh wait, except for the surprise small budget Horror, Lovely Molly. I found that to be really a diamond in the rough.
Life of Pi, was like eating cotton candy and I regretted spending money on it.

Lovely Molly was great!
Moonlight Kingdom i didn't get...but I just don't get Wes Anderson AT ALL.
I also liked VHS, surprisingly cheap but satisfiyng....
Nothing else really jumps to mind lately...not very impressed with art movies or Oscar hopefuls this year...the best picture is a Spielberg movie about Lincoln? Blaaaah!
I was thinking of watching Sons of Anarchy but haven't gotten into it yet...
Like Dexter, though it's noticeably fallen in quality as of late. Breaking Bad was an amazing experiment. Walking Dead (just got a job writing about the show!)

I haven't watched any movies since I started SoA. Season 3 is really good BTW, especially the Irish episodes with the stupid opening music.
