In the Nahuatl language there is a curious word, "teotl." Roughly translated, it means, "spirit." But there is really no adequate word in the Proto-Indo-European family of languages, to illustrate the idea of teotl.
I believe teotl is the universal flow which I've described. The flow of all things. We are in essence, slaves to this monumental flow. We are a part of it, whether we know this or not.
I believe the Semitic people who brought forth the west's monotheistic ideas, may or may not have been referring to teotl, when they spoke of a single god, ruling over all.
But the Ariyans and their descendents seemingly had no conception of such a thing. All they knew were "selves." It seems to me like they equated the idea of selfness with godness. Individuality was a godlike quality to them.
Teotl is also indivisible. Teotl is one; it cannot be broken down to pieces.
But we are not teotl. Ours is the illusion of individuality.

Karla,
I don't agree with you that emotions are what characterize personality. At least not if you equate personality with individuality.
I believe emotions, being as abstract as they are, must be the same anywhere in the universe.
Even molecules feel love/fear aka attraction/repulsion.
Certain molecules are hydrophobic, others hydrophilic. Molecules can love or hate the company of other molecules. Certain molecules can explode in "anger" when they meet other molecules.
I believe when two opposite poles of two magnets meet, they feel exactly how we feel when we embrace our love.
But, I can only claim to know this basically because there are molecules and magnetism at work in my body. And I've seen that the body is a fractal. The smaller pieces all resemble the whole.
I believe we get our qualities from the qualities of our constituent parts.

And I do understand that the molecules, cells and organs of my body don't look like eachother or the whole.
I'm not concerned with the appearances of things.
It is their essence that is the same and brings about the fractal structure, I believe.
It's really something you have to see for yourself.
If we'd only learn to see the essence of things rather than their appearances, the world would become a lot more meaningful, and infinitely strange, I promise you.
Teotl, for example, is perceived as a fractal. No matter how much you try to break it down, you just keep getting more of the same.

On another note, i believe that all myths, all things that can be imagined, have a basis in reality. The Adam and Eve story has its similarities with Pandora's box. Curiosity caused her to do the forbidden thing and all the ills and plagues of the world came flying out. As a gatherer, versus her hunter mate, i can accept however, the idea that a woman was the first to try an hallucinogenic drug or other psychoactive plant. Maybe they were berries since there are a number of them with hallucinogenic qualities.
You also might be right about self. The first real sin committed after taking the seeds of awareness, was that Cain killed Abel. Not only did he murder, but felt a conscious sense of having done wrong because he tried to cover up the act and lie. He wanted more for his Self. He became greedy and jealous.
I'll mull around in that one for awhile.

This is what happened. Dog said, "I need a bone". So he found a bone and buried it. He hadn't even finished marking it yet when a pack leader sprang up and said, "I need a mate". That meant finding another bone, so Dog took one from the pack leader.
The pack leader liked his mate, but he was very unhappy about his missing bone so he began to pick and quarrel with her. Finally, she told him, "alright. I'm moving out. You can keep your little piece of paradise, but I'm finding somewhere else to live."
Maybe the pack leader would have just let her go, but pretty soon she's writing him letters, telling him she can't find any place decent to live so he would have to give her paradise. He complained to Dog who answered, "the only way I can make you another mate is to take another one of your bones"
The pack leader answered, "I'd rather give up paradise than give up another bone," which made Dog very angry.
"I gave up my own bone to make you and you complained that you wanted a mate. I gave you a mate and all you have done is complain about her. If you don't want your mate and can't share paradise and can't bear to part with the littlest piece of you, there's nothing more I can do. Go find your mate and work things out the best you can." That's how it's been ever since.
