inbred traits are there, and the dog can often become morose or neurotic because it isn't being used for what it instinctively knows how to do. My cousin came up with an interesting way to keep his city dogs from getting morose: they would actually carry his water around in little sacks. Weird as that sounds, they felt useful because now they had a "job." German Shepherds also inherit the bad hip problem. I have been worried about my dog, but she seems to be a "runt" and the smaller dogs don't seem to inherit as much of a likelihood to have bad hips. Wolfhounds, on the other hand, tend to only live about 4 years due to medical problems associated with their large size. I can see an article about this topic really going hand-in-hand in an interesting, provocative way with the old article about PETA from back in Stacy's day. That was a really good article.

That is a cute idea about the water sacks! And I didn't know you had a Dog Savvy.

Savvy, German Shepard's are one of the dogs i was thinking about when i listed hip displacements. Your mention of owning a Shepard made me think of it. What a charming, sensitive idea your cousin had! It's so important for a working class dog to feel it has a job. One of my favorite dogs was a Shepard mix. She refused to learn any tricks, and had her own idea of what her job was, which was mainly in watching the kids and letting me know where they were playing. My daughter was very young at the time, and gave the dog the job of taking care of her doll by tucking it into the collar. The dog would carefully carry around the doll all day until Regina retrieved her doll and released the dog from duty.
I like your idea involving the old PETA article(s). It got me to thinking that maybe we could pick up on these old themes now and then, brush them off, present the best of then along with the message of now, sort of like a review or summary of the topic. The magazine is still in its formative stage and i'm still fishing around for ways to improve it.

Savvy I am a registered AKC breeder. I have a beagle and we did two litters with her. She is retired now and part of the reason is responsible breeding. The AKC doesn't want you to overbreed a dog and they actually will give your pups lower status if you have too many litters. (the other reason is I did it mostly for our dog to make her more protective of our space and mature her, also so the kids could experience it...all of which worked) There are a lot of "proof" forms you have to fill out. And you have to show that the dogs are not too closely related, have a vet check for disease, including family history of hip eye, blah, blah, blah. That's if you're responsible...I'm sure there are ways around it.

It would be interesting to see a few informative articles on the good treatment of pets. I'm just wondering how we would make a pet article subversive and to the left or right of center.

hmm... Well since you've bred dogs, you could write one from the breeder perspective, have someone else write from the poor dogs in pounds being put to sleep while others are being intentionally bred perspective? just a thought

That's my thought, too. The approach would have to be innovative. The desired result to me, would be not only to teach more pet owner responsibility but to raise awareness as to how incompatible our lives have become for the rest of earth's inhabitants.

This thread has reminded me of how awesome dogs are and how much human beings suck. Human beings are the most disgusting of animals and the most capricious, irrational and cruel creatures to ever crawl out of the sea. The bible says in Genesis that God regretted making men on the earth and I can sympathize, as I certainly regret creating all of my fictitious human characters.
I stayed up all damned night writing a 40 page book on how to pick up girls via text messaging. How stupid have men and women become in this day and age that they need so much help in following their basic biological urges? Every emotion is simulated, fabricated and insincere. Every notion they have, every care is artificial and simulated. They play games because in this society they are nothing more than products, characters in a video game of consumerism, patriotism and and propaganda. I am surrounded by millions of humanoids, TV-manufactured offspring who can't think for themselves. (present company excluded of course!)
I am no longer able to relate to people, what drives them, what motivates them. God is great, if he exists, because he had enough love to save a world of retards, sell outs, dictators, liars, vampire tweenies and pretentious pricks and dolts, whereas if I had been his adviser I probably would have suggested wiping out the human race and starting over with a world of new blue and green colored species with tentacles and multiple eyes.
I am officially giving up on human beings and devoting myself to writing only dog-related fiction. Dogs are truly complex, noble and self-sacrificing. They captivate my mind and heart. Their intricacies and minds are truly worth discovering and anticipating. I'll let you know when I complete my dog novel.

Good heavens, Mitch! If these consignments are going to put you in such a foul mood, i think you need to get another job! My dog says there's nothing to dating. Check to see if she's waging her tail. If she is, it's a sure go. If she's not, she's probably just another bitch anyway.

I dunno, I like Mitch in this mood. He sounds like me on an average night.
I agree completely. Dogs are loyal, sweet, and caring. Humans are idiots. The Idiot Box may have magnified this, but I think historically speaking humans have always sucked.
On a happier side note, Karla, my dog does "shepherd" my kids when they play in the yard, as if it's her job. It cracks me up to no end. They are good little sheep. *snicker*

Mitch, err uh, can you forward that book to me when you're done? Yeah, a friend of mine, ahem, might be able to gain something from it.

Those Shepards! They absolutely must have something to guard! Even if its the hat you wore out on a windy day and carelessly tossed in a chair when you got home. Mine had a fetish for guarding my shoes. If i couldn't find them, all i had to do was find out whatever she was covering up with her front legs. Usually, it was my shoes, but sometimes, my daughter's doll.

lol that is too cute Karla and Savvy! I am having dog envy here... Mitch... tentacles? You want a planet of tentacle rape! .....but you'd still need some humans for that. You may want to rethink your species recommendation. How about pugs?
