According to Rob Brezsny who does horoscopes amoungst other things like write books and beat on drums in Santa Cruz.
The W.H.O. report for the last year showed that there are more psychic healers in Russia than physicians.
640,000 licesnsed physicians to 800,000 wizards, hedgewitches, etc who use the occult to heal.
Anyway I thought it was interesting. I was too lazy to look up the actual W.H.O. data so I'm trusting Rob on this but usually he's on the up and up.

Grainne, that wouldn't really surprise me. The Russians are a strange people. They swing rather flexibly from a dry, scientific view to dabbling in the occult and searching for aliens. They don't seem to separate probabilities from possibilities as sharply as we do in America, where "accredited" science can only be within the framework of physics, geometry and formulated conclusions. They suppressed their religion, yet it sprang to life again. As far as i've been able to discern, they are as deeply superstitious as the Irish.
At the same time, you have to consider, the country as a whole is still under a great deal of stress. It's just now coming out of its own depression and it's not completely out of the woods yet. It has had twenty hard years of poverty, disease and civil strife. The witch doctors are probably cheaper than the medical doctors, and probably many are well versed in herbal medicines. Neither do i dismiss the power of belief. There is a moment of mental communion that gives strength to the patient. The phenomena is the same whether it's spirit dancers waving feathers or a congregation bowed in prayer. Those who have experienced this know what i mean. The ones who dismiss it... i suppose they never will understand the Russians, the Irish, the Native Americans, the Hispanics or you or me.
