I stumbled upon this news item tonight: news.sympatico.ctv.ca/abc/home/contentposting.aspx?isfa=1&feedname=CTV-TOPSTORIES_V3&showbyline=True&date=true&newsitemid=CTVNews%2f20090917%2fsex_testing_090917Just in case I totally screwed it up (surprise, surprise) the gist of the article is that a South African woman's track and field athelete was asked to go under gender testing because of several factors and it was cruelly (in my opinion at any rate) leaked to the press that she was possibly a hermaphodite. The international association that regulates the atheletes is assumed to be deciding whether or not she can continue to compete in women's track and field events even though, as her mother puts it, "she was born a girl". I just can't help but wonder what the possible ramifications if the decision could be if the association decides that she can no longer compete as a woman. I thought of writing an article on what my opinion would be but I would like a little more input since I have discovered that sometimes my opinion is really out of the loop around here.... |

It seems to me that in the current culture of the world at large if someone makes a choice to raise their Hermaphrodite child a girl, which I can only assume is based on genetic testing and the physical presentation of the individual, then that person should be allowed to compete in the sex of thier choice. It's not as if it was a last minute choice to capitolize on extra strength.
In ancient Greece this wouldn't even be a question.
I find it ridiculous in the extreme to take away what was earned by someone.
Also I think you should be as "out there" as you like. If any of us disagree, it garners more conversation which is good.

The thing that bugs me is all the sour apples that have been tossed around every time someone who isn't among the favorite chosen wins an event. The poor creatures, who have already spent most of their lives training for their event, are submitted to a barrage of private tests in the midst of a very public eye. I saw the news flash first on late night news and the first thing that came to my mind was, "anyone can tell she's a woman." With the cameras shining directly on her, she stood there as embarrassed and self conscious as any girl. Truthfully, it's discrimination. As Grainne said, she didn't undergo surgery or take hormones to become the way she is. It's her natural state. She shouldn't be disqualified any more than someone who has an unusually large mole.

Just for refrence I believe this question was asked of a Russian Disc thrower in the 40's ? She at the time bowed out which everyone took to mean she was obviously male or had male parts, perhaps she just didn't want to undergo the indignity. One wonders if this would be a question if a Male presenting Hermaphrodite were the winner. Would someone want to take away His award due to the fact that he had some female genetics.
Hermaphrodites have long intrigued me. They seem to me a good arguement that everyone stating G-d assigns a sex /sexual prefrence and we should stick to it is perhaps wrong. Because if G-d being supposidly infallible creates an individual who has three choices, be a man, be a woman or be a true Hermaphrodite allows for this G-d is in effect saying choice is okay...or at least throwing a monkey wrench into his followers' philososphy.
