A lot of ideas have been flying around, many of them concerning the technical aspects of the magazine. Wind and Water suggested bringing on board a technical assistant. I think that's a very good idea as writers would have more time to write with fewer worries over how to overcome technical problems. Stacy has been very good about providing technical information and setting up the site for administrative capability, but he's also a writer and an artist and i'm sure would be grateful for the extra creating time.
The subject of advertising the site as well as locating supportive advertisers has also been discussed. In order for the site to be appealing to advertisers, it needs to exhibit some robust numbers in reader hits. In order for advertisers to pay, there must be a record of readers who have used their advertising links to access the advertiser's page. We can all generate new and repeat viewers through our individual blogs. For those who visit writing forums, an occasional announcement there would be useful. I've considered soliciting free lance publishings; but have held back for two reasons. One, we are non-paying and many writers have been burned by web sites that offered publicity but then never carried through. They turned their precious manuscripts in, but the sites closed and who knows what happened to the work. There is a lot of plageurized material out there, and i don't blame any writer who is cautious. Therefore, i feel its better to let the site become established. Once it is, we can list it with other online literary sites, which often don't give payments; just recognition.
The other reason is perhaps a lazy one. With open invitations, there is often a flood of unacceptable work. This project has worked so far through a process of selectivity. We've picked the writers we'd like to see submit and invited them to the forum. I feel by maintaining this selectivity; an each one teach one process; we'll receive the best results for a polished magazine with the least amount of effort.
There has been a suggestion for an interactive character's room. Oftentimes, one of the biggest problems a writer has is building strong secondary characters or active antagonists. Against the backdrop of the main characters, these undeveloped personalites are often like place settings; cardboard structures, easily manipulated. Interacting your uncertain characters can do a lot toward getting in touch with their basic personalities and how they would react to unexpected situations. It would be a basic sweat room for your WIP's.
A poetry corner has been suggested. Yes, i do like poetry. I would just like definitions put on what we would consider to be good poetry. I like the definition a professor once gave; that poetry is a way of coming to a point with the least number of words. I don't care for forced rhyme or a lot of rambling words that sound impressive and discriptive but aren't really saying anything.
There has been little talk about topic discussions. I'm sure everyone by now is starting to build up to a new pet peeve. We can discuss them here, or just roll out our keyboards and free fly our articles. I'm looking forward to new input from everyone.
