I saw that... right when i was hard at work on my death of comedy article, and just had to include it in. The anti-humor league is becoming ferocious. Steve Martin isn't exactly one of my favorite comedians; but then, i don't even have a favorite among current day performers. However, i found him tolerable. He always seems to have this puzzled look in his eyes like he truly doesn't get what's going on, and that, at least, makes me feel a little sympathetic toward him.

Having seen Steve Martin in a non-comedy setting-He was doing his banjo gig- I find this incredibly stupid. Why would people expect him to be all funny all the time? He does so much more from music to serious lecture. I am frankly dumbfounded that people expected and got their money back.

What i don't get is "standard of excellence". Why? What's excellent about potty humor, eating cockroaches for a prize or running into light poles, which is about all we're offered for humor these days. It must be a hard blow for a comedian who didn't depend on bouncing around as an exaggerated super baboon, or with personal communications with God (how many times are they going to rehash that theme, anyway?) I wouldn't list Steve Martin among the great comedians of our cinemascopic times, but at least he has an understanding of comedy.

The comedy standard has certainly deflated. No longer is wit important, it's all about who can smash balls, or say the crassest things that you (maybe) wish you could say.

No, not even the crassest things i wish i could say. I say pretty much whatever i please, but i simply prefer not to have my mouth taste like cow dung. I would call it the crassest things i never wished to hear.

Back in the nineties, we used to get British comedy on TV; shows like Allo Allo, Yes Minister and Porridge. Now we have crassest crassdom from Class Crass.
