We're moving into the time of year when people are making summer travel plans and such. I think we talked a little about this before but I wanted to bring it up in case anyone was making plans.
Maybe we can be on the look-out for off the beaten track things to write about when we travel. For example when I go someplace new and am staying there for more than one or two days. I like to go and visit the local area, where the people who live there actually live. Where they shop and eat.. get a sense of local community and economy. Also I like to get to the off the track historical places. The ones that aren't in books that you have to ask locals about. For example in our town we have a huge underground system of basements that are connected in the downtown shopping area. Newer business owners don't let anyone down there anymore for safety. But when I was a teenager we knew people who owned shops and we went exploring (sometimes without permission) It was pretty cool and a lot of people who live here don't know it's there. It is probably in a shambles and pretty dangerous by now. But we did come across an real live 'den of iniquity' one night which makes a fun story now but really was sketchy at the time.
Anyway every town has a history. Not that we will be able to always drag it out. But hit a library on your vacation, get a story that has been forgotten or ask some old timers questions, whatever.....
It would be nice though to see a different sort of travel log. Maybe we could also report on local issues that probably are way under the national radar but tie into what is going on nationally.
Myself, I was hoping to get up to Washington hitting points of Oregon coast on the way, but it's looking like we are sticking close to home. We'll see what happens.
