The staff has been going through a lot of head bashing and brain storming over the last couple of weeks, to the point where we feel we've been in a mental demolition derby, all because we are hungering, patently longing, for a little paid advertising action. Our sales representative, who prefers to be just be called the humble PR guy, has given us a few suggestions for enticing advertisers to open up their purse strings.
1) Notify advertisers in advance when we plan to publish an article relevant to an advertising product; for instance, Tony's article on gaming.
2) Sell link space. Some advertisers wish to have a link provided at the bottom of the page or within a keyword in particular articles. This will only be done at the express permission of the author. For those who consent, payment will go directly to the author. The monies from paid links on the home page will go into the Subversify general funds to upgrade the mag or create a base for paying its authors.
3) Revamp the travel log. Of all the categories that could have relevancy to paid advertising, the travel log has the most potential. Our PR guy says it doesn't matter whether you travel or not. Take a look around your local area. Photograph it. Think about the things the local people do for entertainment, the things a traveler might wish to see, the foods s/he might wish to try. I emphasize traveler as opposed to tourist or visitor. The tourist goes to see a place, snap some pictures, eat at an expensive restaurant, stay in a nice hotel. The traveler seeks to become one with the people s/he is visiting. The traveler incorporates the local customs.
Give the travel log a prominent spot; a box of its own with a travel photo on it. Give the category a catchy title. Fill the travel menu page with scenery photographs. Give incentive to potential advertisers by photographing a few small businesses from within your local area for free.
4) And you're all going to love this one; activate the Subversify radio podcast. Our idea is to use local bands, struggling musicians that just need a little extra publicity. We're treading carefully through this because musicians want copyright protection as well. We're also talking about comedy scripts, interviews, question and answer, text in debates, radio plays, story and poetry readings.
Our strategies are on the floor and we're open to all suggestions. The magazine has continued to grow steadily, now registering low averages of three hundred hits a day, and spikes that shoot well over six hundred. Let's make these exciting times at Subversify.
