Mitch, I hope this will make sense to you, as you are a programmer.(?)
Consider this.
Something out there is affecting our senses.
Our brain receives sensory data, from the senses, and projects these on to our field of attention, as images, sounds, smells, etc.
Then, an abstract area of our being, the mind, looks at the images and listens to the sounds. The mind then proceeds to interpret the meaning of what it sees and hears.
The end result is our perception of a world as seen through the eyes of a "self."
In coders' terms, this is called a "feedback loop," I believe.
Think about it.

So, if you want to know my opinion on "what" we, men and women, really are..
I would say that we are that "something out there" that is affecting our senses, in the first place.

Also, dear friends, please keep in mind that I'm not presenting these ideas as "something to believe in," rather, my hope is that you will ponder and think about them, try to visualize them, even experiment on them.
Please don't think that I'm presenting dogma here, because that would defeat the whole purpose.
I really am not concerned with what you choose to "believe." It is none of my business.

Also, in my opinion, the existence of such a feedback loop, implies intelligent design.
Intelligent design, however, does not imply God or Aliens.
The truth is simply incomprehensible, indescribable, I believe.
