That is incredibly stupid. And I really cannot sympathize with the long rant that was written by one of your readers.
It seems to me that this silly device would only set one up to feel like an afraid person every time it had to be put in.

The best result is for the rape to have never happened, whether deterrence or other tactics are employed. The outcome from this device is one person who briefly got raped and the other with mutilated genitals...

This mousetrap implies women who are raped want to be vindicated. Actually, vindication is nothing more than a limp wrist gesture. The harm has been done to her psyche, her self-esteem, which suddenly feels dirty and thrashed. She has been reminded for all time that she has no real power. Her body is not truly her own. It can be taken and forced and invaded. She can be humiliated. Vengeance might feel good for a moment, but the long term effects still scar her for life.

I also reject that a woman is necessarily "scarred for life" or a man who suffers rape for that matter. How we go forward depends on us individually. No experience has to define us.
