And yes I do believe the line that the government acts only in ways that it figures the population will swallow. Policies and taxes that most people complain about can be changed if there is a large enough majority that are willing to stand up to the government hacks for. It happens rarely because people are under the assumption that taking on the government means putting themselves or their loved ones at risk, which is a very real possiblity since bullies will try everything under the sun to retain the 'fright factor'. See why I wasn't sure if I should post this?

I love the whole thing. I was a little disappointed to find that Somali Pirates look like overripe pears. He didn't even have a pirate hat or an eye patch...I'm pretty sure pirates all have eye patches...or at least a fake nose to cover the loss of his own to syphilis or something. Anyway, once I got to the Menstrual Blood part I took the pirate to be a Drop of blood so I could let go of the Pear thing, but still a peg leg or something?
Seriosly...You have to remember this is a Nihilistic e-zine...we don't have to pander to pacivists....you simply have to present your argument cohesively and we all know Dr Phal can do that! We also know he is prepared to kill now, so maybe people will not talk back to him...but I hope they do, because this kind of conversation is what we want. I say print the whole thing. Now I have to get back to my piece because if I don't get it in Karla is going to go all Dr. Phal on me.

I hate to be an echo, but i agree with Grainne. The pirate needs an eyepatch, a skull and cross bones hat, a peg leg; something to identify him as a genuine pirate! I also enjoyed the whole thing. I don't really see it as a pro-violence piece. It takes too pragmatic an approach. Dr. Phal rationalizes his butchering in his analysis of ethical behavior. He also presents a natural motivation for pirating; in other words, the piece is not at all one-sided and invites everyone to take a look at the consequences of their personal choices.
I think we should use this one in two parts, with the first part ending with the "all the inhumanity of it all" and a "to be contd." at the bottom, with the next part introduced in the following edition. I noticed a couple of typos; "until your governments devided"... simple change of v to c ... "forged on increasing unchecked our populations"... awkward sentence structure. It should be changed to "forged on increasingly unchecked populations" ... "Idal" needs an e... they are very minor changes but since i don't do the comics, i don't know how to edit them.
I worry a little bit about the attention deficit crowd in the discussion of morals and ethics, but then, Dr. Phal wasn't made for children. If we juggle things just right, his morality discourse could herald the spirituality theme and our own consquent examinations of the internal belief system.

I shall take the cartoon into the shop and give the pirate a make over and fix the typos then - I was going to photoshop Conrad Black's face as the face of the pirate originally but passed for the blood droplet - kudos to Grainne for figuring that one out, I wasn't sure whether there would be a connection made!

Shucks, now the pirate looks like Mr. Crabs. Argh, argh, argh, it seems that the Somali pirate deficient of Western advancements has managed to gain a series of slogan T-shirts. Did he steal those too?
I loved the convo, you pretty much summed it all up. I commend you. Dr. Phal didn't need to do all that preaching at the end, but it works and understandably necessary. I'm just surprised he didn't ejaculate after the excitement of all that Somali bloodshed.

I shoulda figured you already had that in the works. You're truly insane. You fit right in. Who would guess that Dr. Phal practices safe sex?

Aw shucks Grainne, you know how to make a guys cheeks blush - too bad I'm wearing sweats or you'd see that I was.... hey Maya it makes total sense that Dr Phal would be practice safe sex, while in college he and I worked at an institution for the mentally challenged and one of our duties was to teach positive and healthy sexual attitudes to the clients which once included a class on the proper application of a tampon...in a way I guess you can pin point that very class when Dr. Phal and I lost our sanity - having five women straddling toilets and asking me if they put their tampon in just like the way I showed them, there's something about that that opens that dark door that allows one to escape reality far far too easily. In case you're wondering, no I didn't use a fake vagina, I used my hand as my model for the female anatomy which could answer the reason why I have been able to have asuccessful and lasting relationship with the palm sisters... As a bonus groaner, the latest little know fact....

Tony, i laughed my head off over your edited pirate. Alright, i got a good belly laugh, and the head is still half there. You made the pirate almost a little too lovable and squiggly. Somehow, i now visualize him coming back as a ghost to disturb the dreams of Dr. Phal. Sorry about that. It just seems that you can't keep a good pirate down. Davy Jones always helps them extract their revenge.
I feel your metric cartoon really borders into Subversify material. Maybe we could put together an International theme sometime, that cross-references experiences outside of the United States. Maya has spent time in Jeruselum. I've lived in Mexico (where the metric system was one of the first things i had to learn beyond salida and banos) Stacy has been to Europe, and i'm sure there are others who could present the International experience. Even among those who have never left the United States, we have writers who gravitate toward the International crowd so have an awareness of its flavor. It would be a great way to encourage International writers, and an appropriate time to post your metric cartoon.
I know i was going to post a separate cartoon before this one, but it's so timely and i think this Friday we should post the first episode of the Somali Pirate Interview. I'd also like to publish my Trapper Jim short story at this time, which leaves a headline spot and two features open. This somewhat shifts the theme somewhat towards economics and policy (once again) which is a very broad topic, so let's see what this week brings for submissions.

I'll make sure I take my laptop with me this week then so that I can send the cartoon in. As for the next theme would a piece on the death of Federalistic economic policy fit the bill?
