(For instructions on how to join in this interaction please refer to the the instructions thread) A Fireman's Picnic
A picnic fundraiser has been organized in order to help the Laverdale County Fire Department. The town generously volunteered to help the fire department buy new equipment, including a new state-of-the-art climbing ladder. The scene has a very small town, homely ambiance. Donations are being made discreetly. Firemen share scary stories with friends and family as children play amid the tranquil setting. For this community, it's more about the handshaking than the list checking.

I told Mrs. Rasmussen just the other day that we could help out with the floral decorations. It was pitiful. My daughter's whole eighth grade class wanted to help, but i don't think she heard a word I said. I believe she passed it on to those Japanese girls. The ones over there. Well, you know. It's bred into them, like walking in those wooden shoes. Have you ever tried it?

No, ma'am, I don't believe I have, and I think those girls over there are probably Korean.

Korean? Are you sure? When did we ever get Koreans? Anyway, I suppose it doesn't make any difference; I mean about whether they're Korean or Japanese. They all do those clever little things with flowers, don't they? Now, as I was saying, it's really a pity. The eighth grade girls have been just dying to do the arrangements. Just dying, I tell you. I think they could have had a special flower arranging class so all the girls would get an equal opportunity, you know. Why should the Japanese have the corner on flower arrangement. That's what I said. Won't you have more potato salad, Mr. .... The girls and I were up all night peeling potatoes for it.

Ellis will do. Name's Ellis Knight. You spent all night on the potato salad? In that case, I shouldn't disappoint you. Not too much. Not too much. Japanese girls are just splendid, splendid. There's something about them. I don't know. I guess I like exotic women.

You speak like a bachelor, and you should eat more. You're thin as a rail. A good woman wants a little flesh and blood, I know. Now, here's what I heard. Ed Hewling donated $13,000 dollars to the fireman's fund. What do you say to that? His heart must have been moved by the Lord.

If I know Ed Hewling then I would say he is paying the devil back his due. (Smiles) Only in jest, I assure you. Ed and I go back quite a ways. And I must say, since I couldn't help but eavesdrop on your conversation, the Japanese people are among the smartest I have ever met.

(Smiles nervously at Shelly) And I'll let you know why. Education. The Japanese educational system is vastly superior to ours. As for Asian Americans, they have what you might call a self fulfilling prophecy to look forward to. Because we give them so much credit for being of a high intelligence, they start to perceive themselves as smart subconsciously. Because of this perception, they gravitate toward academic activities. If the worse that can happen from a stereotype is higher income and superior quality cars, then that's a stereotype worth spreading.

How rude of me not to introduce myself. I'm Christian Erwin. Part of that money you're raising is being wasted on me. I've been a fireman for the last three years. As for Shelly here, I don't know where she works, but she's been stalking me all night.

(chuckling) Somehow, I find it difficult to believe ole Ed has suddenly discovered a charitable nature or a great deal of concern about his sins. Rumor has it, he's looking at the Governor's seat. Not only will this be a satisfying tax write-off for his business, it's cheap advertising. I'm sure tomorrow the newspapers will be full of his generosity.

Oh no, Ellis. I'm sure you're wrong. Mr. Hewling is a wonderful man. Why, he goes to our church every Sunday. See, that's the difference between these young girls of ours who are influenced by the Japanese and the ones who are kept firmly in hand. Just look at them. I'll bet all they know is that kung fu stuff and those anime movies. Anime! That's what the Japanese bring us to corrupt our youth. It's rotting away their brains. My girls don't watch that stuff. Not my girls.
