We all have particular subjects we feel more comfortable with and knowledgeable about. We also have areas of expertise in different types of presentation. Although we're very accepting of everything from satire to documentary style articulation, we ask that the submissions not be written blog style. We are writers and should understand the disciplines of our craft. That being said, i'd like to run down a brief outline of issues we've started covering, and suggestions that have been given for future ideas. This is mainly for the sake of giving ideas to those who are casting about for a topic. Once we have a credible staff with a full understanding of the expertise of each member, we can possibly give assignments based on what we have on the board.
A) financial shake down. An unfolding drama. We can't escape our indebtedness, it's already upon us. President elect Obama says we are going to "go green". What is the progressive look behind this statement? What do others see, apart from the collapsed dinosaurs of Corporate industry, as a working solution? What are the ramifications of the possible new policies? I'm looking forward to some thought provoking coverage of this one.
B) Gay rights. Carrying the issue to the California Supreme Court actually raises another question; how much power should federal jurisdiction have over the state; and should they be allowed to intervene in social decisions? It also brings up a very old question; is dictating a morality; even by majority decision; Constitutionally right? This question can be taken into polygamous marriage, prostitution, gambling, drug use and a host of other no-victim "crimes". At what point are we passing sound judgment, and at what are we being judgmental?
C) Prescription Drug Abuse. This has been only very lightly touched; from the angle of ADHD misdiagnosis. Prescription drugs are on a rampage and being given to younger and younger clients for such serious disorders and depression and schizophrenic behavior. The elderly, who have been coherent all their lives, when reaching infirmity, are given suppressive drugs that turn them into zombies for those last golden days. They are also being passed freely for every type of medical illness. What differentiates a prescription drug user from a street drug user? What is the history of drugs? In what ways are liberal drug use affecting society?
D) In a sub-category of prescription drug use is the drug war. What are the motivating factors behind the war on drugs? How much is gang mentality and how much is media sensationalism? Who are the players behind the war? What are the possible consequences of its continuation?
E) Foster Care. The area was well covered from the problematic, case load point of view. This is another evolving issue. The foster care issue has, unfortunately, been shoved under the rug for a long time. As we look deeper into it, let's scratch around for some statistics; the percentage of children within ethnic or low-income households, versus white middle class, demographic problems and re-locations, success rates for foster parenting; i.e., number of foster children who grew into happy, well-adjusted adults. Foster care articles, like prescription drug abuse ones, are usually shoved into some unnoticable corner of the paper. By following those little trails, we can expand the noises made by our articles.
Now, a couple of new ideas that have been bandied about.
A) Media Coverage. We all know it sucks. From the exploitation of little girls to the death of Princess Diana, its persecution complex for human lives has been a do or die fireworks display for Hollywood's master minds. It's time to slap the bitches.
B) Sexology; hah, hah. Actually, i got the idea from Maya's blog. C'mon gang, i know there has to be at least a few professional opinions floating around. It would be a fun subject and one of those ah! ha! I caught your attention moments.
Okay, i've spent enough time away from stuffing my turkey. I don't want to be up until six in the morning! This is all i can cram for one day. Hope i added enough grease to start them wheels a-turnin'!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
