The last few weeks, break-up has been in full swing, despite several temporary set-backs with snow flurries and storms. Once break-up begins in earnest, it's astonishingly rapid. Several feet of ice and snow can melt within a couple of short weeks. To give you an idea of how swiftly the changes come, here is a photo of my backyard, two weeks ago. Here is how that same back yard looks today, although by tomorrow, it will probably be free of snow. When i came home from work last weekend, there were some migrating guests using my recently punched in driveway for a swimming pool. Yesterday, the geese thought they would take a bath and wondered where the hell all the water went. The final stages of break-up are really the ugliest time of the year, but Alaska has a flair for the dramatic. This desolate landscape will change overnight and when it does, i'll keep you up to date on its transformation.

Oh yay! Does this mean the ban on outdoors/gardening talk has been lifted? If so I'm going to start collecting wildflower pics.

The ban is lifted, although it will be another month before our wild flowers bloom What's important to me is, i can see the bare ground and i can go outside without a jacket. I won't be completely deprived of flowers. The tulips, the May Day, the lilacs and the strawberries, all blossom in May.

I can't believe the Cook Inlet is going to warm up faster than Alberta. It was deliciously warm today. The kids said they were going to come over to help with the yard clean up, so i baked a cake, soaked some moose in bar-be-que sause, and stoked up the hot tub. They arrived just in time to grill, eat, then decided it was too late in the day to work. Now they're stacking shots in the living room, waiting for me to come back so we can watch a movie together. It felt like the first day of summer, even though the trees haven't yet budded out yet.

We've been going strong the last few weekends, but there is still lots to do. Isn't it a bitch, though? The trees have budded, but it's still chilly out. Where did that blasted sunshine go? I'll ring Leon to find out if he plans to come over again next weekend. Ooh. I'm glad you brought up this page and reminded me; i need to get a shot in of our now greening yard.

I went out and took a photo of the back yard this past weekend, the same back yard that was so thickly covered with snow just a month ago. Sometimes it seems unreal to spend so much time in the middle of winter, then have the season change so quickly. It's like flicking into another time zone. I'm not complaining, though. Hell no. It's all part of the magic; that and those long, long hours of daylight.
